Are you looking for a nutrient-rich alternative to dairy milk? Whether you’re vegan, trying out a new diet, or simply looking for a healthier alternative, switching to plant-based milk has become an increasingly popular go-to option with its wide range of health benefits. They're tasty, versatile, and straightforward to make on your own!
There are numerous types of plant-based milk, but let's explore three of the most popular: almond, oat, and coconut milk – why these non-dairy milk options have become so popular and the benefits of homemade versus store-bought.
What is plant-based milk?
By definition plant-based milk is an option for people who can’t or don’t want to drink traditional dairy milk made from cows, sheep, or goats. Many people are surprised when they first hear of it and wonder 'what is plant-based milk made from?" Plant-based or nut milk has become increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional dairy milk made from nuts, grains, and seeds. Many health benefits are associated with plant-based milk, such as fortification with vitamins and improved digestibility for those with lactose intolerances or allergies. While purchasing these products from the store is possible, the more economical and convenient approach is making your own.
Is plant-based milk better for you?
In the world of dairy alternatives, it's commonly a debate about dairy vs. plant-based milk. Although both have different nutritional values, plant-based milk is cholesterol-free, unlike animal dairy, and contains much lower saturated fat and sodium levels. Plant-based milk is fortified with vitamins that help support a healthy lifestyle, offering adequate amounts of calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, folate, and vitamin B12 compared to traditional dairy milk – making them ideal for those who have special dietary needs or health considerations that require higher levels of nutrition without added calories or unhealthy fats.
Almond milk
Plant-based almond milk is low in protein and calories but high in vitamin E, potassium, and zinc and is typically fortified to make it a good source of calcium. It doesn't contain cholesterol and has fewer calories than animal-based milk, making it an ideal beverage for those seeking to maintain or lose weight. Most often used for smoothies and cereal and is considered the best plant-based milk for baking, next to soy milk. It's no wonder overnight oats with almond milk have become such a staple in the wellness community. However, this plant-based option is not for you if you have a nut allergy.
Oat milk
If you're wondering which plant-based milk has the most protein, oat milk is high on that list. It's a creamy plant-based milk known for its sweet, deliciously rich texture and high protein content, making it easily incorporated into recipes or enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. It's rich in fiber, B vitamins, zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus. Those sensitive to gluten may want to avoid this plant milk unless it's labeled gluten-free. It's most commonly used in smoothies, breakfast bowls, and teas.
Coconut milk
Coconut milk is an incredibly versatile alternative to dairy, especially for those with allergies or sensitivities. It's rich in lauric acid and MCTs, fats that help with digestion, fight bacteria and contribute to a healthy gut environment. It is high in vitamins and minerals and has been shown to improve cholesterol, boost immune function, and reduce blood pressure. Coconut milk adds a unique flavor to soups, sauces, and desserts and can even be used as a delicious plant-based addition to smoothies, coffee drinks, and teas.
Homemade plant-based milk vs. store-bought
Store-bought plant-based milk is often more expensive than homemade and can contain preservatives, added sugars, artificial flavors and colors, thickeners, and other unhealthy ingredients. Some plant-based milk brands are cleaner and more trustworthy than others. Still, it's best to keep these pre-packaged alternatives to a minimum and make your plant-based milk at home whenever possible.
Additionally, since homemade plant-based milk is usually made from whole ingredients that can be sustainably sourced and often purchased in bulk, it provides an economical alternative to store-bought varieties. With greater control over what goes into the milk, homemade plant-based milk also benefits those with allergies and sensitivities due to its ability to be tailored to fit any dietary needs.
How to make plant-based milk (almond, oat, coconut)
Making your own plant-based milk offers convenience and simplicity. For those unfamiliar with making plant milk, it can seem like a daunting task. However, with the Nocci blender it is simple. Sometimes the nut milk bags let too much pulp through, and its a messy process but the Nocci blender's filter basket prevents pulp and requires no fuss.
To make almond milk, you can soak the almonds overnight in cool water but its not necessary. If you want to avoid the lectins in the skin of the almond, you can easily remove the skin by soaking the almond in warm water for about an hour or overnight. Although you can just blend the almonds just as they are without soaking. With Nocci, just add about 15 almonds to the filter basket, add water to your filler cup and press power. It's that easy! I like my almond milk made with just fresh water and almonds, but, you can add salt and any additional add-ins (such as dates for sweetness, honey, vanilla, or cacao powder). Oat milk is even easier to make by adding rolled oats to the filter basket and water to the filler cup. For coconut milk, blend the shredded coconut in the Nocci filter basket and add water to the filler cup. With Nocci it’s easy to make pulp free milk. Check out the many recipes at mynocci.com.
